On April 20, 2017, Deadline reported that Scott Derrickson would work on the film after he finished his work on the TV series Locke & Key. 

On October 19, 2017, Kevin Feige stated that the film would be released a number of times after its precursor, Doctor Strange.

On January 9, 2020, Variety reported that Scott Derrickson had stepped down as director due to creative differences, but that he'd remain on the film as an administrative patron, which Derrickson himself affirmed.
